No. 1 USC Advances To Top Match Play Bracket At Liz Murphey

    April 4, 2014

Sophomore Kyung Kim fired a 1-under 71 while freshman Karen Chung was 1-over to lead No. 1 USC during the lone stroke play round of the 2014 Liz Murphey Invitational on Friday (April 4) in Athens, Ga., as the Trojans qualified for the upper bracket for the final two days of match play.

The tournament format changed this year to resemble the future NCAA Championships format, which will include both stroke play and match play to determine the national champion.

The top and bottom eight teams from today's round will be divided into red (top) and black (bottom) brackets for match play. Teams will play two match play rounds Saturday and one Sunday to determine the event winner. Action begins at 8 a.m. each day.

The Trojans, playing without senior All-American Sophia Popov and sophomore All-American Annie Park, still managed a solid round of 6-over 294 to move into the top bracket.

Kim led the Trojans with her 1-under 71, which included a 1-under front 9 and a par on the back with three birdies on the day. Chung posted a 1-over 73 with a 2-over front 9 and a 1-under back. She was 2-under over the final seven holes.

Junior Doris Chen, the veteran of the contingent in Athens, was 2-over going out but even coming home for her 2-over 74.

Freshman Gabriella Then turned in a 4-over 76, going 2-over on the front and back 9s. Both her birdies came on the back 9, including one on 18.

Sophomore Victoria Morgan, in her first career start for the Trojans, posted a 7-over 79. She was 6-over on the front 9, but settled down on the back 9 at 1-over with three birdies, including two on her final 3 holes.
