Sept. 27, 2015
Junior Karen Chung and freshman Robynn Ree each carded 4-under 68s while junior Gabriella Then posted a 3-under 69 to lead the No. 2 USC women’s golf team to first place in its season-opening round at the Annika Intercollegiate at the Reunion Resort’s Watson Course in Orlando, Fla., on Sunday (Sept. 27).
The Trojans combined for a combined 12-under 276 in their first round since reaching the NCAA Championships match play semifinals in May, one stroke ahead of fellow NCAA contender Duke (277). Texas A&M is third at 10-under 278 while Arkansas and Tennessee are tied for fourth at 4-under 284.
Chung, who had three rounds in the 60s last year and eight in her career entering this season, notched her ninth with a 68 while Ree collected one in her collegiate debut. Chung had five birdies today against one bogey, going 2-under on both nines today. Ree had four birdies without a bogey. Chung and Ree are tied for fourth, three back of first.
“It felt good to get off to a quick start,” Chung said. “Then I found out Robynn and Gabby were 4-under or near it so it just pushed me to keep going and pushing for the team. We’re missing Kyung (Kim) on this trip, but we’ve still got a talented team.”
Then, with four career rounds in the 60s entering her junior year, increased her total as well with her 69, good for a tie for eighth. She was 4-under on her front 9 with a bogey on 6 coming home.
Junior college transfer Tiffany Chan debuted as a Trojan with a 1-under 71 and is tied for 20th. She opened with 14 consecutive pars before sandwiching a bogey on 7 with birdies on 6 and 8. Senior Victoria Morgan is tied for 42nd at 2-over 74. She birdied 1 today.
The Trojans return to action Monday morning, beginning at 5:50 a.m. PT.
