Seniors Gabriella Then and Karen Chung finished 4-under and 3-under, respectively, after a 36-hole marathon while freshman Allisen Corpuz, in her Trojan debut, was 2-under today to lead the No. 3 USC women’s golf team to second place through two rounds of the 2016 Windy City Collegiate Classic on Monday (Oct. 3) at the Glen View Club in Chicago.
The Trojans, who won their season opener last week at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate, combined for an 8-under 568 (281-287) over the first two rounds today, four back of first-place Georgia’s 12-under 564 (282-282). Stanford is third at 3-under 573 (291-282) while host Northwestern is the only other team under par at 1-under 575 (281-294).
USC is trying to win for the third time in Chicago in the past four years.
Then is fifth overall at 4-under 140 (68-72), one better than Chung, who is tied for sixth at 3-under 139 (71-70). Then got hot in the first round’s front 9, posting four straight birdies between 5 and 8 and got to 5-under after a birdie on 11 before settling for a 4-under round. She mixed three birdies against three bogeys in her second round.
Chung’s 1-under first round featured four birdies, including two on her 1-under front 9. She was 1-over on her second round front, but finished the afternoon’s final nine holes at 3-under.
Corpuz, in her first start with the Trojans, is tied for eighth at 2-under 142 (72-70). She was 2-over late in her first round before birdies on 14 and 17 squared her round. She got off to a 2-under front 9 in the second round and birdies on 13 and 14 helped her remain 2-under.
Senior Victoria Morgan (71-75) and sophomore Robynn Ree (71-75) turned in identical scores today to tie for 26th at 2-over 146. Morgan had four birdies on the day, including one on 18 to finish her day, while Ree had three birdies today.
Senior Elizabeth Doty, making her season debut as an individual entry, is tied for 50th at 6-over 150 (76-74).
USC is paired with Georgia and Stanford in the final pairing starting at 7 a.m. PT on Tuesday.
