Popov Tied For 3rd After LPGA Stage III Quailfying School 2nd Round

    Dec. 4, 2014

Trojan four-time All-American Sophia Popov, who graduated last spring, is tied for third after the second of five rounds of the final stage of the LPGA Qualifying Tournament at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Calif., on Thursday (Dec. 4).

Popov closed her 36th hole in style, sinking a short eagle putt to get to 7-under through two rounds of the 154-woman tournament. She is two off the lead and tied with two others in third.

"My long game has been the key," said Popov after the round. "I've been striking it pretty well and I hit 16 greens and two fringes today and I was able to putt pretty well."

Popov is one of five Trojans looking to earn a full-time LPGA card. The top 20 finishers get LPGA Tour membership through "category 12", which essentially is full-time status. Finishers between 21-45 earn partial tour status.

Other former Trojans chasing an LPGA card include All-Americans Lisa McCloskey (122nd tie, +7) and Paola Moreno (65th tie, +2) and All-Pac-10 pick Veronica Felibert (48th tie, +1).

Current junior Annie Park, a two-time All-American, is also competing and is tied with McCloskey.

Action continues Friday through Sunday. Results are available here.
