USC HEAD COACH LINDSEY MUNDAY
On winning the program's first NCAA game
"It feels great. We're really proud of the girls. They've worked really hard this year, and they played really poised. Being in their first NCAA game, there's a ton of emotion, but especially down the stretch, we definitely held up composure. I'm really happy."
On the team's ability to maintain composure after falling behind, 3-0
"I think in these games, you're really excited, and sometime that goes the other way. We've been in that situation before, where teams have come out strong. It's just a matter of chipping away, and taking a deep breath; winning some draw controls, putting your shots away, and just gaining that confidence slowly."
On USC's patience on offense throughout the game
"Especially as we got towards the end of the game, and having the lead, the clock is on your side. You want to take advantage of your opportunities. [James Madison] is a great attacking team. They have tons of threats on attack, so we wanted to make sure we were in control. We were waiting for the best opportunities for us, and that part of keeping composure on the attack. After our defense made a couple of stops, I think it was really important to give them a rest. It was a matter of making sure we were fresh for our sets both offensively and defensively. If we make a big stop, that's a huge momentum killer, so we wanted to make sure we were poised, under control, getting the ball around, and taking our time."
On the play of sophomore attacker Michaela Michael
"Michaela is a great player. First and foremost, she's one of the hardest workers on the team. She works with Alyssa [Leonard] for the draw control all the time and then offensively, she's really powerful. She's really strong. She's really fast. She's really quick. She just had that nose for the goal tonight. I think her teammates did a really great job of opening up some lanes for her. Other people were dodging to create some movement on the defense. I do think it's a team effort, but she obviously had a great day today. I'm happy for her."
