LOS ANGELES -- USC women's lacrosse senior defender Courtney Tarleton was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 15-21. It is Tarleton's second-career defensive weekly award and marks the 14th overall certificate for the USC program.
Stanford senior attacker Anna Salemo was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week and Jenny Wilkens of California received the Rookie of the Week award.
Tarleton (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood HS) had three ground balls and a caused turnover in the Trojans' stunning defeat of then fifth-ranked Duke, 11-5, in Costa Mesa, Calif. Tarleton directed a USC defense that held the Blue Devils to just 11 shots and forced 14 turnovers. It was her unit that kept Duke scoreless for a critical 25-minute stretch through the belly of the contest during which the Trojans went on a 5-0 scoring run to build an insurmountable 9-3 lead.
USC's win over the Devils is the program's first over a top-10 team and just the third over a ranked team in school history. The 12th-ranked Women of Troy (2-0) will have a bye before they host Michigan (March 4, 3 p.m.) and Vermont (March 6, noon) at McAlister Field for the first two of a three-game home stand.
