LOS ANGELES -- USC senior attacker Michaela Michael (Hillsborough, Calif./Menlo School) was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Offensive Player of the Week and freshman midfielder Kerrigan Miller (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point HS) was chosen as the conference's Rookie of the Week for the week of March 13-19, the league announced on Monday, March 20. California sophomore goaltender Jenny Wilkens was named MPSF Defensive Player of the Week.
For Michael, it is her sixth offensive honor and seventh overall (one rookie honor in 2014). She scored 11 goals, handed out six assists, and finished with 17 points and 14 draw controls in the Trojans' three games this week. She recorded her program-record 29th, 30th, and 31st career hat tricks and added three ground balls and a career-high three caused turnovers. During the week, she moved into eighth in MPSF career history for points with 239. Against New Hampshire, Michael scored three goals, put up five assists and had seven draw controls in a 15-4 win. She scored four times and reeled in six draw controls in the 19-8 win over Dartmouth; and then had four goals with three ground balls and three caused turnovers in the narrow 11-10 loss to No. 11 Cornell on the road.
Miller pulls in her second-career rookie honor from the MPSF following a week in which she had 10 goals, one assist, eight ground balls, six draw controls, and four caused turnovers. She produced her third- and fourth-career hat tricks and had a career-high five-goal performance in USC's 19-8 win over Dartmouth. Against the Big Green, she also had three draw controls, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers. In a 15-4 win over New Hampshire, Miller scored three goals, picked up four ground balls, and had two caused turnovers. Against No. 11 Cornell, Miller scored twice, dished out one assist, and picked up two more ground balls and draw controls.
Women of Troy have now won MPSF weekly honors 27 times in program history with 10 offensive awards, 10 defensive awards, and seven rookie of the week honorees. This season, Miller was also Rookie of the Week on Feb. 20, and was chosen alongside junior goalie Gussie Johns, who was named the Feb. 20 Defensive Player of the Week.
The ninth-ranked Trojans (6-2) will return to the East Coast for the second time in as many weeks; this time to face No. 7 Stony Brook (6-1) and Ohio State (6-5). USC will meet the Seawolves for a 7 p.m. ET (4 p.m. PT) game at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook, N.Y., on Friday (March 24) that will be broadcast via stream on AmericaEast.tv.
