LOS ANGELES -- USC women's lacrosse sophomore goalie Gussie Johns (Washington, D.C.) was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Defensive Player of the Week for the week of March 28-April 3. It is her second-career weekly honor from the league. Johns earned Rookie of the Week laurels in 2015. Fresno State's Caroline Dineen-Carlson was named the Offensive Player of the Week and UC Davis' Taylor Cuenin was chosen as the league's Rookie of the Week.
Johns' selection is the seventh MPSF award won by the fifth different USC player this season. Women of Troy have won MPSF weekly honors 19 times in program history with eight offensive awards, six defensive awards, and five rookie of the week honorees.
This week, Johns allowed just five goals over the course of two games for a 3.70 goals-against average and a .615 save percentage. She pitched a shutout in one half of play against Fresno State during USC's 17-3 win (Mar. 31) and then guided the Trojans to a 20-6 win over San Diego State (Apr. 2). Johns produced her 10th and 11th wins with eight saves through the two games and continues to lead the nation in goals-against average (4.70 gaa) and leads the MPSF (sixth in the NCAA) in save percentage (.527).
The seventh-ranked Women of Troy (11-0, 5-0 MPSF) will begin a stretch of four straight road games with a visit to Colorado (April 8) and Denver (April 10) this weekend. The Trojans and the Buffaloes will be shown live on Pac-12 Los Angeles and Pac-12 Mountain while the USC-Denver game will be carried live by Altitude TV.
