LOS ANGELES -- USC senior attacker Michaela Michael (Hillsborough, Calif./Menlo School) was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Offensive Player of the Week and freshman midfielder Kaeli Huff (Eastport, N.Y./Eastport South Manor HS) was chosen for Rookie of the Week honors for the week of March 27-April 2, the league announced on Monday, April 3. UC Davis sophomore midfielder Taylor Cuenin was chosen for the defensive award.
It is Michael's eighth offensive honor and ninth overall (one rookie honor in 2014). She accumulated 10 goals, grabbed 17 draw controls, and added an assist, a ground ball and a caused turnover in two games last week. Michael recorded her 33rd and 34th career hat trick games and moved into third place in MPSF history for career goals (196) and into fifth place for points (258). In a game against Fresno State, Michael secured her hat trick in the first five minutes of the game and finished with four goals and 11 draw controls. It was her seventh-career double-digit draw control performance. Against Cal, Michael scored all six of her goals within a 20-minute span. It was the fourth time in her career that she has notched at least six goals in a single game.
Huff receives her first-career MPSF honor following a breakout performance where she powered the Trojan offense with a career-high five-goal outing against Fresno State. She was 2-for-2 from free position and picked up a career-best three ground balls to go with two caused turnovers and a draw control. Huff also grabbed one draw control and had a caused turnover as a key component to the USC transition game. Her efforts helped the Women of Troy outscore opponents, 42-9, in two wins this week.
Women of Troy have now won MPSF weekly honors 30 times in program history with 12 offensive awards, 10 defensive awards, and eight rookie of the week honorees. This season, Trojans have been tabbed for seven weekly honors.
The ninth-ranked Women of Troy (9-3, 3-0 MPSF) are on the road for a pair of MPSF games this week. USC will face Oregon (7-5, 3-1) on Friday, April 7, at Papé Field in Eugene, Ore., and then heads to San Diego for a game against San Diego State (8-3, 2-1) at the Aztec Lacrosse Field on Saturday, April 8. Both games will be streamed live.
