LOS ANGELES -- USC junior goalie Gussie Johns (Washington, D.C./St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School) was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Defensive Player of the Week for the week of April 10-16, the league announced on Monday, April 17. It is Johns' second award this season, her fourth defensive award (two in 2015), and the fifth weekly honor of her career. Stanford senior attacker Kelsey Murray was the offensive winner and Fresno State freshman midfielder Tiffiny Wallace, Rookie of the Week.

Johns collected nine saves and shut out the Colorado attack in the second half (7-0) of an 11-5 win over the No. 6 Buffaloes. In command of a stalwart defensive effort, Johns also picked up three ground balls and earned saves on five out of six CU shots in the second frame. USC's career leader in ground balls (156) and saves (289), Johns earned her 45th-career victory. Johns currently leads the NCAA in goals-against average (6.69 gaa) and is the MPSF leader (fourth in the NCAA) for ground balls (4.00 gbpg).

Women of Troy have now won MPSF weekly honors 32 times in program history with 13 offensive awards, 11 defensive awards, and eight rookie of the week honorees. This season, Trojans have been tabbed for nine weekly honors.

The eighth-ranked Women of Troy (12-3, 6-0 MPSF) close out the regular season in Northern California this weekend. USC faces Stanford (10-4, 5-1) at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium in Stanford, Calif., on Friday (April 21) at 5 p.m. PT and then heads to Davis, Calif., to take on UC Davis (6-9, 2-4) at noon on Sunday (April 23) at Aggie Stadium. The Trojans and the Cardinal will be shown live on Pac-12 Los Angeles and Pac-12 Bay Area while the USC-UC Davis game will be live streamed via the Aggies' Facebook page.

The defending league-champion Trojans are two wins from matching the conference record for consecutive MPSF regular-season victories. A USC win over Stanford would lock up the top seed in the upcoming MPSF tournament for the Women of Troy. USC hosts the MPSF tournament at McAlister Field next weekend with quarterfinals set for noon and 4 p.m. PT on Thursday (April 27) and semifinals at noon and 4 p.m. on Friday (April 28). The title game for an automatic berth into the NCAA championship tournament is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 30.
