LOS ANGELES -- USC women's lacrosse senior defender Courtney Tarleton (Ridgewood, N.J.) was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Defensive Player of the Week and junior attacker Michaela Michael (Hillsborough, Calif.) was named the Offensive Player of the Week for the week of April 18-24, as announced by the league on Monday, April 25. UC Davis freshman midfielder Shannon Cross was named Rookie of the Week.
Tarleton receives her third weekly award of the season, the fourth of her career. Michael was chosen for Offensive Player of the Week honors for the fourth time this season and the fifth of her career. It is her sixth weekly honor from the MPSF, which includes a Rookie of the Week award in 2014. Five different Trojans have received 11 total weekly honors this season. Michael (4) and Tarleton (3) lead the group, which includes sophomore goalie Gussie Johns (2), junior attacker Kylie Drexel, and sophomore defender Lydia Sutton. Women of Troy have won MPSF weekly honors 23 times in program history with nine offensive awards, nine defensive awards, and five rookie of the week honorees.
Tarleton caused nine turnovers and picked up six ground balls in the Trojans' wins at No. 6 Notre Dame, and at home against No. 9 Stanford and UC Davis. Tarleton directed a USC defense--the best in the country--to three straight games holding opponents under 10 goals; the 15th time for USC this season. Her six caused turnovers against the Fighting Irish set a new USC single-game record and her 44 caused turnovers this season are a program record, which ranks third in MPSF single-season history. She had two caused turnovers and four ground balls against the Cardinal and then scored her first career goal against the Aggies.
Michael tallied 11 points on eight goals and three assists, and had 13 draw controls through the Trojans' trio of wins. She also scored two game-winning goals. Against the Fighting Irish, Michael scored a pair of goals and had an assist and then powered the Trojan offense against the Cardinal with six points (4g, 2a) and eight draw controls. She finished the week with her 57th and 58th goals of the season against UC Davis to go with three draw controls.
Fifth-ranked USC (17-0, 9-0 MPSF) finished the regular season undefeated and holds the top seed in the MPSF tournament (April 28-May 1). The Trojans will face the winner of a game between fourth-seeded UC Davis (7-7, 5-4) and fifth-seeded Denver (8-8, 5-4) in the semifinals on Friday, April 29, at 4 p.m. PT at Cagan Stadium in Stanford, Calif. The Aggies and Pioneers will play on Thursday, April 28, in the quarterfinals.
