WASHINGTON -- The Tewaaraton Foundation announced its 25 nominees for the 2017 Tewaaraton Award, presented by Under Armour on April 27, with USC lacrosse senior attacker Michaela Michael (Hillsborough, Calif./Menlo School) among the elite group of student-athletes. It is the second time that Michael--a two-time Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Year and a two-time IWLCA All-American--has been recognized as a nominee by the foundation.
The Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse players in the United States.
"This is a remarkable accomplishment for these student-athletes," said Jeffrey Harvey, Chairman of The Tewaaraton Foundation. "The Foundation and its board congratulates these talented players and their respective teams for being recognized by the Selection Committees as Tewaaraton Nominees."
Michael leads the NCAA in goals scored (71) and is the top scorer (3.74 gpg) and draw control specialist (6.63 dcpg) in the MPSF. She is the MPSF's career leader for draw controls (401), ranks second in goals (227), and is third in points (294). Michael's totals this season for goals (71) and draw controls (126) set new MPSF single-season records. She is a three-time MPSF all-conference honoree and was USC's first-ever IWLCA All-American (third team in 2015). This season, she was chosen as the league's Offensive Player of the Week four consecutive times and has received the conference's weekly award 10 times in her career.
Five men's and five women's finalists will be selected from the list of nominees, announced on Thursday, May 11, and invited to the 17th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony on Thursday, June 1, in Washington, D.C. Michael and All-American midfielder Amanda Johansen were the first two Trojans ever to be named to the Tewaaraton Award's watch list at the beginning of 2016. Michael and All-American defender Courtney Tarleton were each named to the nominee list at the end of the 2016 season. Michael, junior defender Lydia Sutton and junior goalie Gussie Johns were each on the 2017 watch list.
The No. 7-ranked Trojans (16-3) won their second-consecutive MPSF title last week and are on a 10-game winning streak. USC's MPSF title awards the Women of Troy the league's automatic qualifier berth into the 2017 NCAA championship tournament. The NCAA will announce its field of 26 teams in a live selection show on NCAA.com on Sunday, May 7, at 6 p.m. PT.
