GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The USC women's rowing team claimed gold medals in the collegiate four and pairs divisions of the 2014 Pacific Coast Rowing Championships at Lake Natoma on Saturday, May 17. The eighth-ranked Women of Troy are in Northern California for the Pac-12 Championships, which are set to begin at 9 a.m. PT on Sunday, May 18.

The Trojans' second varsity four was coxed by Shelby Penfield with Erica Christianson in the stroke seat followed by Erika Blumberga, Michelle Popelka, and Elaine Krebs in the bow. Up against Stanford, Sacramento State, and Washington State, the Women of Troy had pulled away by the midway point of the race and maintained open water through to the final 500 meters before they crossed the line with a time of 7:49.10 to claim first place. Stanford came in second with a time of 7:54.30. Sac State was several boat lengths behind and registered a time of 8:21.00 but finished ahead of Washington State's time of 8:37.00.

In the collegiate women's pairs division, USC's duo of sophomores Katherine Plaxe and Nikki Kloss put up an impressive open-water victory with a time of 8:38.00 to outpace Sonoma State's second-place finish (8:53.20) and a Washington State Club pair (9:08.20). Stanford's pair finished fourth but was not given a time due to a referee's ruling.

The Trojans' novice eight will begin the Pac-12 Championships on Sunday at 9 a.m. PT. Varsity four boats will race at 9:30 a.m., followed by the second varsity eight at 10 a.m., and the varsity eight at 10:30 a.m. The Pac-12 also sponsors a men's rowing championship, which races between women's races.
