RIO DE JANEIRO -- USC women's rowing All-American Anna Wierzbowska and sister Maria finished third in their women's pairs' heat on Monday, Aug. 8, at Lagoa Stadium to earn a spot in the A/B semifinals. The Wierzbowska sisters put Poland into the semifinals with a final time of 7:12.82.

The five-boat heat was won by U.S. pair Grace Luczak and Felice Mueller. The Americans led the entire way and crossed the finish line at 7:05.14. Spain's duo of Anna Boada Peiro and Aina Cid I Centelles finished in second, less than a second ahead of the Wierzbowskas, at 7:12.00. In fourth, Italy's pair of Sara Bertolasi and Alessandra Patelli crossed the line at 7:13.06, just a hair behind the Polish tandem. In fifth, Romanian pair Madalina Beres and Laura Oprea finished at 7:18.16.

The third-place finish allowed the Wierzbowskas to avoid having to race in a repechage. They will move directly ahead to the A/B semifinals set for Wednesday, Aug. 10, beginning at approximately 8:30 a.m. in Brazil (3:30 a.m. PT). The race will be streamed live on NBCSports.com and via the NBC app.
