Aug. 29, 2014
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - After allowing a goal in the opening minutes to Iowa State, the USC women's soccer team took charge, tallying three unanswered goals to defeat the Cyclones 3-1 in the Notre Dame adidas Invitational at Alumni Stadium on Friday evening.
"I thought we played much better today than last week," said head coach Keidane McAlpine. "Everyone came out with a lot of energy and we created great scoring opportunities. Caroline [Stanley] made some outstanding saves and we scored three really good goals. This was a big win for us over a good Iowa State team."
After a lightning delay of almost 40 minutes, the Women of Troy and Cyclones were able to get underway in the opening match of the tournament.
The Cyclones caught the Trojans first, scoring an early goal in the third minute to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Women of Troy, who had some excellent opportunities of their own in the opening minutes, got on the board in the 34th minute to tie the game off an excellent left-footed, 23-yard strike from junior midfielder Jamie Fink.
At the half, the Women of Troy had outshot the Cyclones 10-2 and were looking for that go-ahead goal. That strike came in the 58th minute, off an outstanding give-and-go from Kayla Mills to Katie Johnson, who made a nice turn and finished it off near post to put the Trojans ahead, 2-1.
Goalkeeper Caroline Stanley made two impressive saves down the stretch in the second half, preserving the Trojans lead. The senior finished with three saves on the day.
The team never looked back, adding another goal in the 85th minute to put the game away with a good combination play. Megan Borman fed the ball to Sydney Sladek, who found an open Reilly Parker to finish off the shot from 10 yards out down the left flank.
Overall the Women of Troy outshot the Cyclones 19-5 and collected 10 corner kicks.
The Women of Troy are back in action at Alumni Stadium on Sunday, Aug. 29 at 1:30 p.m. ET as they play tournament host No. 9 Notre Dame.
