A Make by Mills Pushes Trojans Ahead of USD 2-1 in Home Opener|
Sept. 11, 2015
The Trojans (3-3-0) outshot the Toreros (1-5-1) in the first half 13-2, but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities and the game was scoreless entering halftime.
Both squads stepped up their play in the second half, which was much more of a back-and-forth contest. The Trojans finally found the net, striking first in the 69th minute off a corner kick by Jamie Fink that bounced near post to a waiting Johnson who was able to get a touch on it through the traffic and it trickled home.
The Toreros were not going to go down without a fight, however. About five minutes later, the Toreros answered with a goal off a corner kick of their own. Jacquelin Altschuld delivered the corner from the left side and found the head of Julia Sherwood near post. Sherwood completed a beautiful flick just inside the near post for the equalizer.
The Trojans continued to fight back and put shots on frame and in the 82nd minute Mills beat her defender at the top right corner of the 15-yard box and slipped in a shot to the far post, where Torero goalkeeper Michelle Craft had no chance at it. The eventual game-winning goal for the Trojans was her first of the season.
Mills and Morgan Andrews led the way with five shots apiece. Four of Andrews' five shots were on frame, including a free kick from about 20 yards out of the left side that bent in and almost went in near post, but an outstanding save from Torero keeper Craft in the 68th minute almost broke open a then-scoreless match.
The Trojans will be back in action, taking on Long Beach State at 12 p.m. PT on Sunday at McAlister Field. The game will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
