CORVALLIS, Ore.– The No. 9 Trojans extended their winning streak to nine games as they defeated Oregon State 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Paul Lorenz Field, behind Katie Johnson’s hat trick.

“This was a good result for us today and a great way to finish the weekend. I thought we had a great start to the game. The first two goals in the first 11 minutes of play were great team goals, and Katie was very good with her finishing today,” said head coach Keidane McAlpine.

The Trojans (9-2) were led by K. Johnson’s second career hat trick. She previously netted three goals in a game in 2013 against Loyola Marymount.

Johnson and the Trojans wasted no time getting on the board, as Julia Bingham played the ball up the left flank to Alex Anthony who flicked it forward to Johnson for the finish in the eighth minute of play. Less than three minutes later she struck again, this time Savannah Levin played a square ball from the right corner of the 18-yard box to a waiting Morgan Andrews who fed a one-touch pass forward to Johnson who finished to the left far post from the right side, 10 yards out.

The 2-0 lead held up through the first half, where the Trojans outshot the host Beavers 10-3. The Trojans forced Beaver goalkeeper Bella Geist to make three saves in the half, while Sammy Jo Prudhomme did not have one.

The second half was more of a back-and-forth affair, as the Beavers were not going to go down easily. In the 56th minute, Johnson finished off a ball bouncing in the box into an empty net for her hat trick. The hat trick, the second of her career, is the first for any Trojan this season and the first since Andrews had three in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against Cal State Fullerton.

The Beavers continued to fight, however, and got on the board in the 88nd minute after a cross from the right side connected with Nikki Faris far post. Her first shot hit the right post, but she was able to collect the rebound and put it away.

Goalkeeper Prudhomme made two saves in the second half in the victory. Johnson led the Trojans with eight shots, six of those on goal.

The Trojans return home for a huge week, as they host Stanford and California, with both contests having Pac-12 title implications.
