USC's Late Push Falls Short At Colorado|
Oct. 25, 2013
BOULDER, COLO. -- The USC women's soccer team mustered up some late-game energy, but it was not quite enough to overcome the deficit handed down to the Trojans in Boulder today. Instead, Colorado fended off the Women of Troy and snagged a 2-1 victory, giving the Buffaloes their 12th win of 2013, while USC falls to 6-8-2 overall and 1-5-1 in Pac-12 play with the road loss.
One of USC's best looks of the game came on a blast from Tanya Samarzich, who scooped her way free and rifled a left-footed shot on goal, glancing it off the near post just before the close of the first half. Colorado had forced four saves out of USC goalkeeper Caroline Stanley in the first 45, but Stanley and the Trojan defense were up to the challenges in holding things scoreless by halftime.
In the second half, USC was getting good at getting deep in Buffalo territory. The Trojans would get whistled for two offsides calls and also together a series of corner kicks, but the shots weren't coming. After one of those USC offsides, Colorado countered quickly and against the run of play the Buffaloes found themselves up 1-0 on a finish from Brie Hooks in the 66th minute. Six minutes later, after Marlee Carrillo sent a shot wide, Colorado again tapped into its transition game, beating the USC defense and finding some padding when Alyssa Herwatt chipped her opportunity off the crossbar and in to take the Buffs ahead 2-0 with 18 minutes left in regulation.
The clock just stubbornly kept ticking down as the Trojans pushed to battle back. They had come back from two down in their previous game, thanks to two scores from Marlee Carrillo, although USC would fall in OT in last week's Friday contest. This week, Carrillo was again a spark, as the sophomore plugged in another late goal for the Women of Troy. Stanley would line up to take a USC free kick in the 88th minute, finding Carrillo for the header and the score that cut it to a one-goal game. But the equalizer would elude the Trojans in this one, leaving USC with the 2-1 road loss in Boulder.
The Women of Troy now head over to Salt Lake City for a Sunday (Oct. 27) matchup against Utah at 1 p.m. MT.
