LOS ANGELES - The third-ranked USC women's sand volleyball team (3-0) posted back-to-back 4-1 wins over ranked opponents on Friday, March 13, at Merle Norman Stadium. The Women of Troy defeated No. 4 Florida State (5-3) to open the day and then claimed a victory against No. 6 Loyola Marymount (1-5).
In the day's first dual, the Trojans' duo of freshman Jenna Belton and senior Bria Russ tacked up a 21-19, 23-21 win against Vanessa Freire and Annie Montgomery of Florida State on court five to start USC off. The Seminoles evened the score with a win at court four where Victoria Paranagua and Kristina Pellitteri edged Trojan sophomores Nicolette Martin and Allie Wheeler, 21-19, 21-19.
An injury at the top court forced Florida State to forfeit the match and gave the Trojans a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Sophie Bukovec and junior Alexa Strange had the clinching point at court two where they defeated Taylor Nyquist and Katherine Plessy, 21-12, 21-17. USC added a fourth point at No. 3 when seniors Eve Ettinger and Meg Norton upended Julie Brown and Stephanie Pellitteri, 21-16, 21-19.
Martin and Wheeler bounced back from the morning's loss and defeated LMU's Rachelle Suaava and Hannah Tedrow, 21-15, 21-15, on court four to give the Trojans the first point of the second dual. Russ teamed with freshman Jo Kremer and earned a 2-0 lead for USC as they took out Kristen Castellanos and Taylor Scioscia, 19-21, 21-7, 15-4, at court five.
Ettinger and Norton delivered the knockout punch as they put together a 21-9, 21-12 win on court three against Avery Bush and Anne Marie Taylor. The Lions got on the board when their top pair of Betsi Metter and Sarah Sponcil shocked the Trojans' tandem of sophomores Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes, 21-19, 21-15. Bukovec and Strange had the fourth point on a 21-19, 21-12 win against Taylor Akana and Litara Keil.
In a non-counting match with LMU, freshmen Marielle Bagnard and Olivia Asprey won, 21-15, 21-16, against Lindsay Carr and Nicky Kevorken. In a non-counter with FSU, Kremer and freshman Lorna Brandt fell in three sets, 18-21, 21-17, 15-9, to Katie Horton and Kayla Joyce. Earlier in the day, Florida State posted a 3-2 win over Loyola Marymount.
The Women of Troy will see many of the same pairs in a 20-team single-elimination tournament tomorrow (March 14) at Merle Norman Stadium. Action begins at 9 a.m. PT.
