HONOLULU -- The No. 1-ranked USC beach volleyball team (5-0) recorded its first 5-0 sweep of the season in a win over Nebraska (1-1) on Queen's Beach sand on Thursday, March 16. The win was the 35th consecutive dual victory for the Women of Troy and kept the Trojans undefeated on the season. The contest is the first of seven over the course of three days for top-ranked USC.
Seniors Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes posted their 78th straight victory together as they defeated Andie Malloy and Justine Wong-Orantes, 21-13, 21-16, at the top court for USC's fourth point of the dual. The clinching point came from the adjacent court as seniors Sophie Bukovec and Allie Wheeler put together a 21-18, 21-7 win over Annika Albrecht and Olivia Boender.
With the dual decided, USC's pair of junior Terese Cannon and senior Nicolette Martin posted the fifth point for the Trojans to complete the team's first 5-0 sweep. The duo defeated Kelly Hunter and Lauren Stivrins, 22-20, 21-17.
In the first two matches of the dual, juniors Jenna Belton and Jo Kremer got the Trojans started with a 21-13, 21-10 win over Brooke Smith and Sydney Townsend at court five. USC took a 2-0 lead in the dual when sophomore Abril Bustamante and freshman Joy Dennis claimed a 21-14, 24-22 win over Mikaela Foecke and Kenzie Maloney at the No. 4 position. In a non-counting exhibition match, freshman Cammie Dorn and sophomore Katrina Kernochan took down Tiani Reeves and Justine Wong-Orantes, 21-14, 21-17.
The Trojans have a short rest before the bottom three pairs take the court again for a dual against No. 4-ranked Florida State (4-2). The USC-FSU match is set to begin at noon HT (3 p.m. PT).
