HONOLULU -- The No. 1-ranked USC beach volleyball team (8-0) took down Utah (1-6) in the teams' first-ever meeting to improve to 2-0 at the 2017 Outrigger Hawai'i Invitational on Friday, March 17. The Women of Troy defeated the Utes, 4-1, on Queen's Beach and will play three ranked opponents tomorrow (March 18) to conclude the tournament.

The Trojans scored the first three points of the dual to clinch and got their first point from court four where sophomore Abril Bustamante and freshman Joy Dennis took down Brianna Doehrmann and Tawnee Luafalemana, 21-12, 21-10. One court down, juniors Jenna Belton and Jo Kremer dispatched of Berkeley Oblad and Emily Twohig, 21-14, 21-14, in straight sets for a 2-0 USC lead.

Seniors Sophie Bukovec and Allie Wheeler defeated Bailey Choy and Eliza Katoa, 21-14, in the first -- but gutted out a close second set for a 21-19 win and delivered the clinching point for the Women of Troy.

USC's pair of seniors Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes was shocked by Adora Anae and Dani Barton in a 21-12 first-set loss at the top court. The loss snapped a steak of 105 consecutive sets won, but Claes and Hughes fought tooth and nail to get a 22-20 win in the second. The Trojan duo took control in the third and cruised to a 15-7 win to extend their match winning streak to 81 overall. The win is also the 100th all-time by the pair to set a new USC and Pac-12 (and presumably NCAA) record.

In the final match to end, junior Terese Cannon and senior Nicolette Martin dropped their first set to Torre Glasker and Carly Trueman, 21-15, but won their second, 21-11. The two pairs went back and forth in the third, but the Utes scored the final two points to sew up a 15-13 win to put up the only Utah point in the dual.

USC is back in action tomorrow (March 18) to conclude the Outrigger Hawai'i Invitational with three matches, each against top-10 ranked foes. First, the Trojans take on No. 7 Arizona at 9:15 a.m. HT (12:15 p.m. PT). In a second match, the Women of Troy meet No. 4 Florida State for the second time in three days for a match at 11:45 a.m. HT (2:45 p.m. PT). USC concludes the tournament on the islands with a match against No. 5-ranked host Hawai'i at 4:45 p.m. HT (7:45 p.m. PT).
