No. 1 Trojans Sweep Bakersfield and Saint Mary's For Ninth Straight

    LOS ANGELES - The top-ranked USC women's sand volleyball team (9-0) earned a pair of 5-0 sweeps over CSU Bakersfield (6-3) and Saint Mary's College (3-5) at Merle Norman Stadium on Thursday, March 26. The Women of Troy didn't drop a single set in the 10 individual matches to continue their best start to open a season in program history.

    In the day's first dual, the Trojans took on Bakersfield and made the first mark with a 21-13, 21-6 win at court five where freshman Jenna Belton and senior Bria Russ defeated Luiza Martins and Star Tucker-Campbell. USC added a second point from court four as sophomores Nicolette Martin and Allie Wheeler completed a 21-11, 21-17 win against Hazel Perrens and Kelsee Sawyer.

    Sophomores Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes clinched the dual for the Trojans from the top court with a 21-12, 21-10 win over Mariah Alvidrez and Molly O'Hagan. USC added a fourth point at court three where seniors Eve Ettinger and Meg Norton defeated Sophie Flemion and Sara Little, 21-13, 21-14. The Trojans got the 5-0 sweep when sophomore Sophie Bukovec and junior Alexa Strange defeated Sydney Haynes and Danika Youngblood, 21-11, 21-17, at court three.

    Against Saint Mary's College, Belton and Russ started things off again with a 21-8, 21-10 win at court five against Hannah Liserra and Nicole Singh. Martin and Wheeler won, 21-13, 21-11, over Maegan Conroy and Madi Wilkerson at court four to put USC ahead, 2-0. Ettinger and Norton produced the clinching point at court three with a 21-14, 21-12 win against Mileva Popovic and Clare Powers.

    USC went ahead, 4-0, on the Gaels with a win at the top court where Claes and Hughes took out Dalas Dodd and Samantha Tinsley, 21-17, 21-13. Up against Mary Hernandez and Alexis Salmons on court two, Bukovec and Strange took a 21-14 win in the first set, but fell behind, 7-1, in the second. The two Trojans fought all the way back to take a 26-24 win in the second to complete the 5-0 sweep for the Women of Troy.

    The Trojans hit the road for three duals this weekend. USC will take on New Mexico at 5 p.m. PT and Grand Canyon at 7:30 p.m. at the GCU Sand Courts in Phoenix, Ariz., on Friday (March 27). Saturday morning (March 28), the Trojans face Arizona State at the Pera Club in Tempe, Ariz., at 3 p.m.
