No. 1 USC Sweeps San Francisco For 48th Straight Win

    SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The No. 1-ranked USC beach volleyball team (18-0) posted a 5-0 sweep of San Francisco (0-10) in the San Francisco Invitational at Main Beach on Saturday, April 1. The Women of Troy remained undefeated and extended their record winning streak to 48 consecutive matches.

    In a two-flight format, the Trojans scored the first dual point at court five when sophomore Katrina Kernochan and freshman Lainy Thomas logged a 21-12, 21-7 win over Montana Green and Trish Koutsoukos. At court four, USC went up, 2-0, on a 21-9, 21-13 win by hometown girl junior Jenna Belton and junior Jo Kremer. The duo beat Kate Ashman and Shannon Levinson for the second point.

    Seniors Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes clinched the dual for the Women of Troy when the duo completed a 21-9, 21-4 win over Nora Buvarp and Emily Reed at the top court. It was the 95th consecutive victory for the Trojan tandem. USC added a fourth point from court two where junior Terese Cannon and senior Nicolette Martin took a 21-13, 21-5 win over Camille Araujo and Marjolijn Oskam.

    At court three, freshman Joy Dennis and senior Allie Wheeler paired for the first time due to a lineup change and picked up a 23-21, 21-14 win over Carly Lowry and Dane Miller to complete the 5-0 sweep.

    In a pairs' tournament with Saint Mary's College, Claes and Hughes won the gold bracket with a pair of victories including 21-11, 21-12 over Emily Bible and Sarah Chase, and a 21-15, 21-19 against Lindsey Knudsen and Payton Rund. In the silver bracket, Dennis and Wheeler beat Belton and Kremer, 21-16, 27-25, for the title; and in the bronze bracket, Kernochan and Thomas took down the freshman duo of Cammie Dorn and Avery Hazelrigg, 21-14, 21-8, to win.

    Up next, the Trojans meet the Gaels for a dual on Sunday (April 2) in the Monterey Invitational II at 9:30 a.m. PT on Del Monte Beach in Monterey, Calif. The Trojans finish the weekend against San Jose State (5-5) at noon PT on Sunday.
