BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The No. 1-ranked USC women's sand volleyball team (14-1) pushed its program-long winning streak to 13 matches with a pair of 5-0 sweeps over Bakersfield (4-6) and San Jose State (0-8) at the CSUB Sand Courts on Saturday, April 5. It is the sixth straight 5-0 sweep for the Women of Troy and the 10th overall of the season.
The Trojans posted their second sweep of the Road Runners to open the morning. Juniors Eve Ettinger and Bria Russ earned their 15th victory as a pair with a 21-13, 23-21 win over Sydney Harris and Danika Youngblood at court four. Freshmen Paige Hines and Nicolette Martin put up a 21-16, 21-18 win against Sara Little and Hazel Perrins on court five to give USC a 2-0 lead in the match.
At the top court, senior Kirby Burnham and freshman Sara Hughes took out Debora Araujo and Molly O'Hagan, 21-11, 21-18, to clinch the dual. Seniors Sam Hirschmann and Natasa Siljkovic made the score 4-0 from court three where they beat Lisa Bartsch and Julia Bowen, 21-14, 21-10, before sophomore Alexa Strange and freshman Kelly Claes completed the sweep with a 21-17, 21-16 win over Mariah Alvidrez and Shayna Guitare at court two. In a non-counting match, junior Kati Duddridge and senior Brooke Fournier earned a 21-19, 21-11 win over Sophie Flemion and Star Campbell-Tucker.
In their first meeting with the Spartans, the Women of Troy walked away with a 5-0 sweep on a clinching victory by Duddridge and Fournier at court three. The duo defeated Lauren Jacobsen and Cori O'Donoghue, 21-14, 21-11. At court five, senior Mary Buckingham teamed with Ettinger for a 21-7, 21-7 win against Lyndsay Albiani and Sabrina Webb, and at court four, freshman Alexx Murphy joined Russ for a 21-8, 21-17 win over Brittney Diffine and Lindsay Skadeland.
With the dual in the bag, Claes and junior Alexa Stonish posted a 21-10, 21-8 win over McKenzie Palassou and Megan Powers at court two before Hines and Martin won, 21-15, 21-10, at the top court over Kiely Pieper and Tyanna Roy.
