MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. -- The top-ranked USC beach volleyball team (24-0) booked a 4-1 win over No. 15 Arizona State (10-13) at the Manhattan Beach Pier in the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge on Saturday, April 8. The Women of Troy posted their 54th consecutive win and remained undefeated on the season.
Freshman Joy Dennis and senior Allie Wheeler picked up USC's first point of the day with a 21-14, 21-14 win over Katelyn Carballo And Ellyson Lundberg at court three. One court down at court four, juniors Jenna Belton and Jo Kremer got their sixth straight win and knocked off Katie Cross and Sage Patchell, 21-14, 21-17, to put the Women of Troy on top, 2-0.
USC's newly-formed sophomore duo of Becca Dunn and Katrina Kernochan clinched the dual for the Trojans with a 21-16, 22-20 win over Natalie Braun and Bethany Wedepohl at court five. At the top court, USC added a fourth point when seniors Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes recorded a 21-15, 21-18 win over Bianca Arellano and Whitney Follette for their 103rd consecutive victory. The two pairs went three sets less than 24 hours ago on Merle Norman sand on campus.
With the dual already decided, and the Trojans holding a 4-0 lead, the pairs at the No. 2 position went into a third set. There, Madison Berridge and Oluoma Okaro held off USC's duo of junior Terese Cannon and senior Nicolette Martin, 21-16, 20-22, 15-10, to score the Sun Devils' only point. The ASU win snapped a six-match winning streak for Cannon and Martin.
The Women of Troy conclude their five-match weekend with a 3:30 p.m. meeting against Saint Mary's College (14-4). For more information and updated scores, please visit TeamUSA.org.
