TUCSON, Ariz -- The top-seeded and No. 1-ranked USC beach volleyball team (32-0) posted their second clean sweep of the day at the 2017 Pac-12 Championships with a 5-0 victory over fourth-seeded Arizona State (16-15) on Thursday, April 27, at Bear Down Beach. The win marked USC's 15th sweep of the season and their 62nd in a row, while also moving the Trojans into tomorrow's winner's bracket semifinal.
The Trojans scored their first point of the dual on court four, as the newly-formed pair of sophomores Abril Bustamante and Katrina Kernochan posted a 21-10, 21-9 victory over Arizona State's Cassidy Pickrell and Mia Rivera. USC's next point came from seniors Sophie Bukovec and Allie Wheeler on court two, as they recorded a 21-15, 21-16 sweep against Madison Berridge and Oluoma Okaro. That win would be the seventh in a row for the veterans, who are now 19-5 on the season with an 18-4 mark in dual play.
Shortly thereafter, the dual was clinched on court three by the tandem of junior Terese Cannon and senior Nicolette Martin, who won their match by an identical 21-13, 21-13 score over Katelyn Carballo and Ellyson Lundberg. Cannon and Martin won their eighth match in a row and are now 30-7 on the season--the third USC pair to reach the 30-win plateau this season.
Seniors Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes posted the fourth point of the dual with their win over Bianca Arellano and Whitney Follette at court one. After battling to claim the 22-20 win in the first set, the seniors took care of business in the second and took the set, 21-14. The sweep was finalized on court five, as juniors Jenna Belton and Jo Kremer won their fourth match in a row and their 28th dual of the season, defeating Natalie Braun and Katie Cross by a score of 21-16, 21-13.
Next up for the Trojans is a semifinal matchup against second-seeded and No. 2 UCLA (28-3) in the winner's bracket, scheduled for 9 a.m. PT on Friday (April 28). The game will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Network, with the winner automatically advancing to the finals of the 2017 Pac-12 Championship. The Trojans are 2-0 against the Bruins this season and 7-0 (1.000) in the all-time series.
Furthermore, Friday will mark the beginning of the Pac-12 Pairs Championship, as Claes-Hughes and Bukovec-Wheeler are scheduled to compete in the single elimination tournament beginning at 3 p.m. PT. As the top seed, Claes and Hughes will take on the winner of the No. 16/17 seed matchup at 6 p.m., while Bukovec and Wheeler will take the No. 6 seed into their match against the No. 11 seed of Berridge/Okaro of Arizona State at 4 p.m.
