Quintero, Ettinger and Norton Named USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week

    LOS ANGELES -- USC swimming senior Cristian Quintero and women's sand volleyball pair of graduate Meg Norton and senior Eve Ettinger were named USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Mar. 23-29, on Monday, Mar. 30.

    Cristian Quintero showcased a dominating performance on his way to multiple titles at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in Iowa City, Iowa. On day two of events, the senior won USC's first NCAA title in the 200y free since 2001 by clocking a school-record 1:32.03. Quintero then teamed up with sophomores Dylan Carter, Michael Domagala and Reed Malone in the 800y free relay in a come-from-behind swim, breaking the school record in 6:11.64 to defend their NCAA title.

    On day three of the NCAA Championships, the 400y free relay team of Quintero, Santo Condorelli, Ralf Tribuntsov and Dylan Carter won the race with a school-record 2:47.06, .08 faster then second place North Carolina State, coming from behind again. USC won two relays in the same meet for the first time since 1977.

    Quintero also was third in the 100y free and fifth in the 500y free, giving him three top 5 individual finishes for the second year in a row.

    Also nominated for men's student-athlete of the week honors: Bobby Stahel (baseball) and Andy Benesh (volleyball).

    Sand volleyball seniors Eve Ettinger and Meg Norton went 6-0 this week and provided the Trojans with the clinching point in three duals. Ettinger and Norton pulled out a tough three-set victory over Emily Cook and Delaney Knudsen of No. 3-ranked Pepperdine, 17-21, 21-14, 15-9, to help secure USC's new No. 1 ranking.

    The duo also won straight-set matches against Bakersfield (21-13, 21-14 over Sophie Flemion/Sara Little), Saint Mary's College (21-14, 21-12 over Mileva Popovic/Clare Powers), New Mexico (21-11, 21-19 over Devanne Sours/Chloe Crappell), Grand Canyon (21-18 21-14 over Alex Green/Brooke Razo), and Arizona State (21-7, 21-12 over Sydney Palmer/Kizzy Willey). Ettinger and Norton are now 16-2 overall on the season and are a perfect 12-0 in dual matches at court No. 3. The Women of Troy will host Loyola Marymount and Concordia on Thursday, April 2, at Merie Norman Stadium (1:30 p.m. PT).

    Also nominated for women's student-athlete of the week honors: Michaela Michael (lacrosse) and Ionna Haralabidis (water polo).

    The USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week are voted on by the student assistants and Sports Information Directors of the USC Sports Information Office. Nominations are compiled and distributed for voting by Alec Koondel. Student assistant voters include Rachel Dobrin, Robby Kolanz, Dru Chavez, Colette Garcia, Andrew McKagan, Tera Novy, Max Schwartz and intern Katie Ryan.
