SAN FRANCISCO -- The USC beach volleyball senior pair of Kelly Claes (Fullerton, Calif.) and Sara Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif.) was named Pac-12 Pair of the Week for the week of March 28-April 2, as announced by the conference on Tuesday, April 4.
It is the fifth such honor for the pair and the fourth time this season that a Trojan tandem has taken home the award. Women of Troy have now won the conference's weekly honor 10 times (six in 2016).
Claes and Hughes went 8-0 last week in straight sets and helped the top-ranked Women of Troy extend their record-winning streak to 50 consecutive duals. The USC pair had five sets in which it held opponents to single-digit points as Claes and Hughes improved to 26-0 on the season and extended their record-setting winning streak to 99 matches. The Trojans' tandem took down last week's DiG Magazine National Pair of the Week Lindsey Knudsen and Payton Rund (Saint Mary's College) twice, in convincing fashion. Claes and Hughes won the gold bracket in two different pairs tournaments (with Cal and SMC) and helped the Women of Troy win all four of their duals by a 5-0 count.
The Trojans put their 50-match winning streak on the line as hosts to Washington (1-0) and No. 15 Arizona State (9-11) at Merle Norman Stadium on Friday, April 7. Both duals will be shown live on the Pac-12+ streaming platform. On Saturday, April 8, the Women of Troy head to Manhattan Beach to face ASU, Loyola Marymount, and Saint Mary's College in three duals at the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge.
