INDIANAPOLIS -- The top-ranked USC beach volleyball team (30-2) was awarded the second seed in the upcoming inaugural NCAA championship tournament, it was announced by the NCAA on Sunday, May 1. The Women of Troy secured the first-ever Pac-12 championship and finished with a 30-2 overall record.
The championship will be played at Gulf Place on the sands of the Hangout in Gulf Shores, Ala., the site of the last four national championships awarded by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). The Trojans are the defending national champions, winners of the 2015 AVCA title, USC's 123rd overall team championship.
The Trojans were selected as part of an eight-team field out of 60 NCAA institutions sponsoring beach volleyball. Three teams were selected from the east region and three teams were selected from the west region. The remaining two teams were selected at-large from a pool of all teams across the country.
Florida State (29-1), out of the east, received the top seed. USC, seeded No. 2, was the first of three consecutive western-region squads. Pepperdine (19-3) was No. 3 and UCLA (19-6) was No. 4. At-large selections Arizona (19-5) and Hawai'i (16-8) were seeded fifth and sixth, and are both out of the west. Georgia State (25-8) was seeded No. 7 and Stetson (26-7) was No. 8. USC has a combined 12-2 record against teams in the championship field. The Trojans faced all seven of the other teams and suffered losses only to Florida State and Pepperdine; 3-2 each time.
The Women of Troy will start the tournament on Friday, May 6, at 11 a.m. CT against Georgia State. A win puts USC in a second-round match set for 4 p.m. the same day. The double-elimination bracket (identical to the one used by the Pac-12 for the conference championship) concludes with a title match at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday, May 8.
The championship is hosted by the City of Gulf Shores, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the Orange Beach Sports Commission. The event will be televised live by Turner Networks, with truTV providing live coverage on Friday (May 6) and Saturday (May 7) from 2-5 p.m. CT (12-3 p.m. PT). The championship round will air on TBS on Sunday (May 8) at 1 p.m. CT (11 a.m. PT). Additional live streaming coverage of every court in each match of the tournament will be available on NCAA.com.
