De Grasse, Claes and Hughes Named USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week

    LOS ANGELES -- Men's track and field junior Andre De Grasse and women's sand volleyball pair Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes were named USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of April 28-May 3, on Tuesday, May 5.

    Andre De Grasse had a record-breaking day at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet on May 3, as the Trojans came out victorious for the first time since 2010. In the 100m dash, De Grasse took first place with a PR of 10.04 (+0.4) to set the Loker Stadium record and tie the Dual Meet record set by Ato Boldon in 1996. With that time, De Grasse is now tied for second on USC's all-time list, only .02 second behind the record of 10.02 set by James Stanford in 1980.

    The claim the win for the Trojans, the junior ran the third leg in the men's 4x400m relay event. Troy won the relay with a time of 3:09.89 to claim five points for USC and ultimately defeat the Bruins 82-81. USC is next scheduled to compete at the Pac-12 Multi-Events Championships in Westwood, Calif. on May 9-10.

    Also nominated for men's student-athlete of the week honors: AJ Ramirez (baseball).

    Sand volleyball sophomores Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes swept the competition at the 2015 AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships as the dynamic duo led the Women of Troy to their first-ever team national title. The duo went 4-0 in the team championship with wins over Julie Bassett/Kaley Melville of Stetson, 21-12, 21-17; Kelley Larsen/Kellie Woolever of Pepperdine, 21-10, 20-22, 15-13;  and twice against Long Beach State's Delainey Aigner-Swesey/Chelsea Cabrajac to lead to the Trojans to the national crown.

    Claes and Hughes also put on a showcase in the AVCA Pairs National Championship. The two went 4-0 in bracket play without surrendering a single set to the opposition. The sophomores met Betsi Metter/Sarah Sponcil of Loyola Marymount in the final and earned a 21-12, 21-18 win to claim the pairs title. Their win was the third time in a row that USC has brought home the pairs national title.

    Also nominated for women's student-athlete of the week honors: Michaela Michael (lacrosse).

    The USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week are voted on by the student assistants and Sports Information Directors of the USC Sports Information Office. Nominations are compiled and distributed for voting by Alec Koondel. Student assistant voters include Rachel Dobrin, Robby Kolanz, Dru Chavez, Colette Garcia, Andrew McKagan, Tera Novy, Max Schwartz and intern Katie Ryan.
