Chenault, Weiss Win Races On SMU Classic First Night

    Sophomore Chelsea Chenault won the 200y free and freshman Hannah Weiss won the 100y back to lead USC's nine-woman contingent on the first night of the SMU Classic in Dallas on Friday (Oct. 17).

    The Trojans finished the first night in fourth place in the six-team competition. LSU leads with 160 points and is followed by Louisville (152.5), SMU (143), USC (130), North Carolina State (119.5) and Miami (111).

    Each team uses only eight swimmers and one diver in the uniquely scored meet with one swimmer per team allowed in the `A' final and `B' final of each event. Tonight's events included the 400y medley relay, 400y IM, 200y free, 50y free, 1-meter springboard, 100y fly, 100y back, 100y breast and 800y free relay. Saturday's schedule includes the 200y medley relay, 500y free, 200y breast, 200y back, 3-meter springboard, 100y free, 200y fly, 200y IM and 200y free relay.

    Chenault won the 200y free in 1:45.31 while junior Kasia Wilk was fourth in the `B' final (1:49.13). Weiss won the 100y back in 52.95 while junior Kendyl Stewart was third in the `B' final (55.93).

    USC opened the day taking third in the 400y medley relay with Wilk, Chenault, sophomore Evan Swenson and junior Jasmine Tosky going 3:38.19. Tosky's final leg of 49.70 was best in the heat as was Wilk's 52.77 leadoff and Swenson's 51.77 third leg.

    Sophomore Kelsey Kafka was DQ'd in the 400y IM `A' final though Tosky did win the `B' final in 4:12.34, a time that would have been good enough for second in the `A' final.



    Swenson was sixth in the `A' final of the 50y free in 23.46 with junior transfer Lucy Worrall sixth in the `B' final (24.99). Senior Haley Ishimatsu was fourth on 1-meter (273.80) while Stewart was also fourth in the 100y fly (53.83). Worrall was fifth in the `B' heat (56.15).

    Tosky was fourth in the 100y breast (1:02.89) while Kafka was fourth in the `B' final (1:04.21).

    USC closed the meet with a second in the 800y free relay as Tosky, Wilk, Swenson and Chenault went 7:16.50.
