Carrillo and Women’s Swimming 400y Relay Team Named USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week|
March 22, 2016 LOS ANGELES – Sophomore infielder Adalberto Carrillo and the women’s swimming 400y free relay team were named USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Mar. 14-Mar. 21, on Tuesday, Mar. 22.
USC CREDIT UNION MEN’S STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Adalberto Carrillo had a career 4-for-4 day at the plate and 4 RBI, including a two-run home run in the Trojans 18-5 rout over No. 12 California on Saturday, Mar. 19 at Dedeaux Field. Carrillo’s team-leading fourth homer of the season helped the Trojans win the three-game series.
In the final game of the series, Carrillo added a key insurance run on a sac fly to lift USC 5-4 over Cal and take their first Pac-12 series of the year.
The Trojans next hit the road to take on UC Santa Barbara in a two-game series from Mar. 24-Mar. 25 and host them on Mar. 26 at 2 p.m PT at Dedeaux Field.
Also nominated for men's student-athlete of the week: Alex Slaught (volleyball) and Logan Smith (tennis).
USC CREDIT UNION WOMEN’S STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Senior Kasia Wilk, freshman Kristen Vose and juniors Chelsea Chenault and Anika Apostalon won USC’s first-ever NCAA title in the 400y free relay at the 2016 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the McAuley Aquatic Center on Saturday (March 19) in Atlanta, Ga.
The Trojans won the relay in a school-record 3:09.69, only 1.15 off the NCAA record set last year. After Wilk’s start, Vose narrowed the deficit to Georgia to 0.54. Chenault further cut the gap to 0.41, setting the stage for Apostalon's final 100. The junior posted a 46.77 split, which lifted USC to a 1.13 second margin of victory. USC finished sixth overall at the NCAAs.
In Wilk’s debut NCAA A final, the senior finished third in the 100y free with a personal best of 47.35. Apostalon also joined forces with Wilk in the 100y free, and finished eighth in 47.72. Wilk and Apostalon became the first Trojan duo to reach the 100y free A final since 1985.
Vose finished third in the 200y IM on Day 2 of the NCAAs. She secured back-to-back PRs with a 1:55.39 in prelims and reduced it a second more in the A final to finish in 1:54.27. She also finished eighth in the 200y breast in 2:10.42.
On the final night, junior Chelsea Chenault finished third in the B final of the 200y fly and 11th overall with a season-best 1:54.96 after posting a 1:55.27 in prelims. She also took fourth in the 200y free B final in 1:44.93
Also nominated for women's student-athlete of the week: Kylie Drexel (lacrosse) and Katerina Berdousi (track).
The USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week are voted on by the student assistants and Sports Information Directors of the USC Sports Information Office. Nominations are compiled and distributed for voting by Brett Warner. Student assistant voters include, Andrew McKagan, Carlene Jones, Tera Novy, Kiia Brantley, Rachel Dobrin, Regan Estes, Lucy Worrall, and Alec Koondel.
