No. 39 USC Women Edged Out By Huskies 4-3|

SEATTLE-- The No. 39 USC women’s tennis team fell to the No. 35 Washington Huskies 4-3 in today’s (April 2) match. The Women of Troy are now 6-8 overall and 1-4 in Pac-12 conference play.
The afternoon kicked off with doubles as No. 34 Katz/Smith defeated Washington’s Fung/Hance 6-3 on court two. USC’s No. 67 Kulikov/Westby were locked in a tight battle on court three against Washington’s Kopcalic/Slavica and prevailed to win their match 7-6 (4) and claim the doubles point for USC. This marked the second match in the row that the Trojans have won the doubles point.
The Trojans entered the singles portion of the competition with a 1-0 advantage. The Women of Troy’s momentum from doubles carried over as USC’s No. 47 Jessica Failla would nab the first singles win for Troy as she defeated Washington’s Nour Abbes 6-0, 6-3 on court two. USC continued to find success as Madison Westby overpowered her Husky opponent Alexis Prokopuik 6-1, 6-4 on court five. Westby’s win made the match’s overall score 3-0.
The Huskies had not yet given up. Washington’s No. 111 Miki Kobayashi fired back with a win over USC’s Rianna Valdes 6-2, 6-4 on court three to keep the Huskies in the match. Husky Katarina Kopcalic then defeated USC’s Angela Kulikov 6-2, 6-3 on court six. Next to finish would be Washington’s No. 118 Stacey Fung as she beat USC’s No. 20 Gabby Smith 6-2, 6-4 on court one to tie up the overall score at 3-3.
The outcome of the match would fall upon the decision on court four. USC’s No. 96 Zoë Katz was entrenched in battle with Washington’s Kenadi Hance. After winning the first set 6-2, Katz dropped the second set 7-5. Hance ran away with the match and defeated Katz 6-1 in the decisive third set and clinched the match for the Huskies.
USC will return to Los Angeles to defend their home court as they take on Utah on Friday (April 7) at 1:30 p.m. PT and Colorado on Saturday (April 8) at 12 p.m. PT in Marks Stadium.
