No. 12 Cal Tops No. 13 USC Women|
April 4, 2014
BERKELEY, CALIF. -- The No. 13 USC women's tennis team was dealt its first loss of Pac-12 competition in falling 4-0 today in Berkeley to No. 12 California. The Trojans got off on the wrong foot in coming up empty in doubles, and the Golden Bears worked out ahead and snagged singles wins to wrap the match for Cal. USC goes to 14-5 overall with the loss and is now 5-1 in Pac-12 play.
Cal came out firing in doubles play as #60 Chi/Schutting topped USC's senior duo of Boren/Christian 8-1 for the early leg up. On court two, Cal's Manasse/Starr pulled off an 8-4 win over USC's Katz/Olmos, and the 1-0 advantage was tucked into the Bears' column.
Rain would interrupt singles play, postponing action for over an hour before the courts dried enough to start back up. USC's Zoë Scandalis and Brynn Boren had scored wins in their first sets, but the rest of the Women of Troy were in an early hole. The Bears took advantage of their leads, with #43 Lynn Chi finishing off a 6-2, 6-2 win over USC senior Kaitlyn Christian on court four for a 2-0 Cal edge. Klara Fabikova managed a 6-3, 6-2 win over USC's #69 Giuliana Olmos next, and the Trojans were behind 3-0 in the match. Wrapping up the day's action would be Cal's #30 Anett Schutting on a 6-2, 6-2 clincher over USC's Gabriella DeSimone to suspend action on the remaining courts.
The Women of Troy now turn to take a trip to Palo Alto to square off against No. 4 Stanford in a 12 p.m. match tomorrow (April 5).
