Women of Troy Sweep Utah 7-0|

LOS ANGELES--The No. 40 USC women’s tennis team swept the Utah Utes 7-0 this afternoon (April 7) in Marks Stadium. With this Pac-12 victory, the Women of Troy are now 2-4 in conference play and 7-8 overall on the season.
Doubles kicked off the afternoon and the Trojans lit up the courts. The No. 38 Trojan duo of Katz/Smith dominated with their strong 6-0 victory over Ute pair B. Turley/W. Turley. USC’s No. 61 Kulikov/Westby was victorious over Utah’s Da Rosa/Petrovic 6-2 on court three to claim the doubles point for the Trojans. As the doubles point had already been secured, court one’s match featuring USC’s No. 74 Failla/Valdes and Utah’s Calton/Pletcher was suspended with a USC leading score of 5-2.
The Trojans entered the singles portion of the competition with a 1-0 advantage, and extended USC’s streak of winning the doubles point to three matches in a row. Court four was the first to finish as USC’s No. 110 Zoë Katz blasted through her match to defeat Utah’s Jena Cheng 6-2, 6-2. About 60 seconds after Katz’s win, Trojan No. 20 Gabby Smith closed out her match with a victory over Ute Brianna Turley 6-3, 6-1. Smith’s win increased USC’s lead to 3-0.
After a winning a tight first set 7-6 (3), USC’s Madison Westby came back strong in the second set to swiftly beat Utah’s Whitney Turley 6-1 to clinch the match for Troy.
Although Westby sealed the deal for the Women of Troy, the remaining matches were played out. USC’s Angela Kulikov whipped up a 7-5, 6-1 win on court six over Ute opponent Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa, and then Trojan Rianna Valdes defeated Utah’s Alexia Petrovic 6-2, 6-2 on court three. Jessica Failla would have the final word for the Women of Troy as she closed out the afternoon with a win over Ute Margo Pletcher 6-3, 6-4 on court one.
USC will return to Marks Stadium on Saturday (April 8) at 12 p.m. PT to defend their home court against the Colorado Buffaloes.
