Women of Troy Upset Arizona State 4-3|

TEMPE, Ariz.--The No. 39 USC women’s tennis team upset No. 29 Arizona State in an important Pac-12 Conference match this afternoon (April 14) in Tempe, Ariz. This win improves USC’s overall record to 9-8 and their conference record to 4-4.
Doubles kicked off the afternoon as USC’s No. 41 duo Katz/Smith defeated Anderson/Slaysman 6-2 to take the first win of the day for Troy. The Sun Devils fired back as Hampton/Jump took down USC’s No. 61 Kulikov/Westby 6-4 to even out the score. Arizona State would go on to win the doubles point when No. 73 Osborne/Fosaa Huergo defeated USC’s No. 71 Failla/Valdes 7-5.
Although the Sun Devils entered the singles portion of the competition with a 1-0 advantage, the Trojans had not stopped fighting. USC’s No. 46 Jessica Failla nabbed a win on court two over Sun Devil No. 109 Sammi Hampton 6-3, 6-0. ASU responded with a win of their own from court five as Savannah Slaysman defeated USC’s Madison Westby 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. On court three, Trojan Rianna Valdes claimed a victory against ASU’s No. 102 Kelley Anderson 6-4 7-6 (4) to even out the overall match score at 2-2.
USC’s No. 23 Gabby Smith fell to ASU’s No. 75 Kassidy Jump 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 on court one, but Trojan Angela Kulikov kept the Women of Troy in the match when she overcame ASU’s Gussie O’Sullivan 6-3, 7-5 to tie up the match at 3-3.
The outcome of the match fell upon the result of court four. After losing the first set 7-6 (5) to Nicole Fossa Huergo, Trojan No. 113 Zoë Katz battled to take the second set 7-5. The third set was just as tight as the first two. After exchanging games, Katz and Fossa Huergo were tied at 5-5 in the decisive third set. Katz powered through the final two games to win the set 7-5 and clinch the match for USC.
USC’s next action takes them southbound to Tucson, Ariz. where they will face the Wildcats from the University of Arizona on Saturday (April 15) at noon.
