OJAI, CALIF. — In a busy first day of individual action at the Pac-12 Championships in Ojai, USC’s big winner on the day was senior Giuliana Olmos. The No. 4 seed in the singles championship draw, Olmos dispatched two opponents today to step into tomorrow’s quarterfinals. She’ll also team up with sophomore Gabby Smith for the opening of doubles competition tomorrow, also standing out as the No. 4 seeded duo in doubles play. Today and tomorrow’s action is all taking place at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.

Olmos had two other Trojans teammates alongside her in today’s opening Round of 32 singles championship play. Sophomore Madison Westby would draw a tough first opponent and fell to the top seed. While Olmos pinned up a 6-2, 6-0 win in her first match, USC junior Zoë Katz served up a 6-1, 6-3 upset of Cal’s #76 Lynn Chi to advance to the Round of 16. There, Katz would come up short in a 7-5, 7-5 loss to Stanford’s #93 Krista Hardebeck, but Olmos stayed the course and delivered a 6-4, 6-4 win over Kyle McPhillips of UCLA. That win pushed Olmos into tomorrow’s quarterfinals, where the #24 Trojan senior will square off against ASU’s Ebony Panoho.

Also in action today were three more Trojans in the singles invitational draw. While Kristen Venter and Paige Keating both fell in their respective first matches, USC had two Trojans power up for two wins to move into that draw’s quarterfinals tomorrow. Sophomore Gabby Smith and freshman Jessica Failla persevered to ring up two wins and take their places in tomorrow’s invitational quarterfinals.

Championship and invitational doubles play gets going tomorrow as well in Ojai. USC has No. 4 seeded Olmos/Smith joined by #80 Katz/Westby in the championship bracket, while Keating/Venter are paired up for invitational action.
