Women of Troy Upset Arizona State to Lock Down Semifinal Placement|

OJAI, Calif.--The No. 6 seeded USC women’s tennis team upset the No. 3 seed Arizona State 4-3 in the Quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Team Championships on Thursday (April 27) in Ojai, Calif. The Women of Troy improve to 13-9 overall and will face the winner of No. 2 seed California and No. 7 seed Washington on Friday (April 28) at 2 p.m.
Doubles kicked off the morning and the Sun Devils won the first match of the day as Hampton/Jump defeated USC’s No. 80 Kulikov/Westby 6-2. The Trojans responded with a win of their own as No. 48 Katz/Westby took down ASU’s Anderson/Slaysman 6-2. The Sun Devils would have the final word in doubles as Osborne/Fossa-Huergo beat the No. 41 Trojan tandem of Failla/Valdes 6-2 to claim the doubles point.
USC entered the singles portion of the competition at a 0-1 deficit. Arizona State continued to roll with their momentum from doubles as Sun Devil Savannah Slaysman beat USC’s Madison Westby 6-3, 7-5 on court five.
On court two, USC’s No. 38 Gabby Smith put the Women of Troy on the board as she claimed a win over ASU’s No. 121 Samantha Hampton 6-2, 6-3. Trojan Rianna Valdes followed suit by defeating Sun Devil No. 109 Kelley Anderson 6-4, 6-1 on court three. Valdes’ win tied up the overall match score at 2-2.
Arizona State continued to put up a fight as No. 63 Kassidy Jump beat USC’s No. 37 Jessica Failla 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 on court one. Although the Sun Devils were ahead, the Trojans decided to keep the match interesting as No. 122 Zoë claimed another point for USC in her victory over Nicole Fossa-Huergo with a tight score of 6-2, 7-6 (12) to tie up the overall match score at 3-3.
USC’s future in the Pac-12 Tournament fell into the hands of freshman Angela Kulikov on court six. After falling to ASU’s Gussie O’Sullivan 5-7 in the first set, she battled back to take the second set 7-5. Kulikov lit up the court in the decisive third set winning 6-1 to clinch the match for USC and send them to the Semifinals.
