The No. 1 ranked USC women's tennis team defeated Youngstown State 4-0 in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday (May 9) on their home court in Marks Stadium. The Women of Troy improve to 22-2 overall for the season.

The Trojans, who are the top seeded team for the first time since 1985, entered the match with relentless intensity. The Trojan duo of #19 Olmos/Scandalis took the first win of the day in the doubles competition as they sprinted through their match and defeated the Penguin pair of Burak/Lackova 8-0 on court two. Shortly thereafter, #24Katz/Santamaria collected another victory for Troy on court one as they beat Youngstown State's Burak/Lackova 8-2 to secure the doubles point for USC.

The Trojans entered the singles portion of the competition with a 1-0 lead over the Penguins. On court five, freshman #78 Gabby Smith blasted through her first set 6-1 to take a strong lead over Youngstown State's Julianna Heino. She did not let up in the second set as she scored a solid 6-0 win to earn the second point for the Trojans.

On court two, junior #14 Giuliana Olmos proved why she is a force to be reckoned with as she secured a 6-0 score in the first set over Penguin Dominika Lackova. Following closely behind Smith, Olmos claimed another strong 6-0 second set score to finish a perfect match against Lackova.

The Women of Troy continued to assert their dominance, but USC's #79 Meredith Xepoleas would have the final word. After defeating Youngstown State's Sofia Macias in the first set, the freshmanclosed out her match with a tricky return that forced Macias to swing out of bounds. Xepoleas' 6-2, 6-0 victory clinched the match for the Trojans and advanced them to the Second Round. This was Xepoleas' fourth clincher of the season. She also increased her winning streak to 18 matches, the longest on the team.

In the first match of the day, No. 32 Virginia Tech advanced to the Second Round after they defeated No. 38 Long Beach State 4-2 in the First Round.
