No. 1 Trojans Victorious Over Virginia Tech To Advance To Round of 16|

The No. 1 seeded Trojans swept Virginia Tech 4-0 on Sunday (May 10) in Marks Stadium in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to advance to the Round of 16. USC improves to a 23-2 record.
The Trojan duo of Smith/Westby claimed the first win of the day for USC. They defeated Virginia Tech's Daxhelet/Willford 8-1 on court three. On court one, the pair of #24 Katz/Santamaria closed out their match versus the Hokie twosome of Mita/Stoica by beating them 8-5 to claim the doubles point for Troy.
The Trojans entered the singles portion of the competition with a 1-0 lead over Virginia Tech. On court five, USC's Gabby Smith powered through her match versus Virginia Tech's Sansith Nandakumar. She won with a strong 6-0, 6-1 score to earn the second point for USC.
On court six, Trojan Meredith Xepoleas followed in Smith's lead. She swiftly defeated Hokie Katherine Butler 6-1, 6-1 to increase the Trojans' lead to 3-0. She improvedher winning streak to 19 matches, the longest on the team.
USC's Madison Westby had the final word of the day to mark the Trojans' second sweep of the weekend. Westby's determination was evident as she started down in both sets, but in true Trojan form fought back to become victorious. She won on a strong return down the line with a final score of 6-4, 6-4. Westby collected her seventh clincher of the season, which is more than any other Trojan on the team.
The Trojans will face No. 16 Texas Tech (21-6) in the Round of 16. Over the weekend, the Lady Raiders beat New Mexico State (4-0) and LSU (4-2) in the first and second rounds, respectively. This is the fourth appearance for Texas Tech in the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Raiders are 3-3 in NCAA play, and this is their inaugural appearance in the Round of 16. The Trojans are 1-0 in their series record with Texas Tech.
The Round of 16 will begin on May 15 in Waco, Texas at Baylor University's Hurd Tennis Center.
