MALIBU, CALIF. — The No. 20 USC women’s tennis team made a power move into the next round of NCAA action with today’s 4-0 sweep of No. 50 UNLV. Up against the Rebels in Malibu for the NCAA First Round, the Women of Troy were ready to pounce, drumming up a quick win to continue on their postseason path. Now 13-5 overall, USC will face either No. 8-seeded host Pepperdine or Idaho tomorrow (May 14) at 1 p.m. at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu. The winner of that match will secure a trip to Tulsa, Okla., for the NCAA Round of 16 and beyond next week.

In today’s NCAA First Round tilt against UNLV, the Trojans picked up a swift doubles point. At the No. 3 spot, the freshman tandem of Jessica Failla and Rianna Valdes showed their comfort level on the NCAA scene with a decisive 6-1 win over UNLV’s Kotseva/Artiga to light the spark for USC. Up on court on, USC’s top guns #6 Giuliana Olmos and Gabby Smith pinned up the doubles point for USC with a 6-2 win over UNLV’s Yang/Zhu, and the Trojans were off to singles play toting a 1-0 lead.

USC’s #27 Giuliana Olmos had made herself right at home on court one after that doubles effort, staying the course in singles to lock down a speedy 61-62 win over UNLV’s #120 Carol Yang and make it a 2-0 Trojan advantage in the match. So, too, would Valdes and Failla continue their winning ways. The #119 freshman Valdes took the Trojans to a 3-0 lead with her 6-4, 6-3 win on court six over Iren Kotseva to set up fellow freshman and doubles teammate Failla for the clincher. Failla took our UNLV’s Cristine Moroi with a 6-2, 6-2 decision that got USC its 4-0 lead to chalk up victory and suspend action on the remaining courts.

USC now looks toward a 1 p.m. face-off against either No. 8 seed Pepperdine or Idaho in tomorrow’s NCAA Second Round in Malibu.
