Three Women of Troy Press On In NCAA Singles Play|
May 20, 2015
WACO, TEXAS -- USC women's tennis will have another busy day in Waco, Texas, tomorrow, with two doubles teams in the NCAA mix along with three Women of Troy who punched their tickets through to the NCAA Singles Round of 32 with victories in today's opening round. Senior Sabrina Santamaria, junior Giuliana Olmos and freshman Madison Westby all registered Round of 64 wins today at the Hurd Tennis Center. USC also has Santamaria paired up with sophomore Zoë Katz in doubles, along with Olmos and Zoë Scandalis also competing in the doubles first round tomorrow (May 21).
Senior Zoë Scandalis had the toughest draw of the bunch, coming up against UNC's #7 Jamie Loeb for today's Round of 64. After falling in the first set, Scandalis rallied back and heaped pressure on the No. 7-seeded Tar Heel by snagging the second set. In the third, however, Loeb caught a break, then another, and went on to post a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Scandalis. The loss wraps Scandalis' singles career as a Trojan with her holding a 108-48 all-time singles career record. She'll take up the doubles courts tomorrow (May 21) for a Round of 32 matchup alongside Olmos.
Making her first appearance in the NCAA Singles draw, freshman Madison Westby proved up to the challenge. The #57 freshman squared off against Florida's #28 Brianna Morgan and delivered. Westby jumped out to a first-set shutout win before Morgan answered back and took the second. Westby buckled back down, however, and pulled out a 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 victory to move on to tomorrow's Round of 32.
While Westby was notching her first NCAA win, USC veteran #24 Sabrina Santamaria was in full force in her Round of 64 contest against William and Mary's #53 Leeza Nemchinov. Santamaria was in full control in that one, tacking up a 6-1, 6-2 win that puts her through to the next round.
The last match of the day for the Women of Troy saw #14 Giuliana Olmos -- who holds a 9-16 seed in the draw -- facing a rematch of her NCAA Team Semifinal bout with Vanderbilt's Astra Sharma. Sharma had the match-clinching victory against the Trojans and then against UCLA in the NCAA title match, so this Round of 64 singles bout had all the makings of a battle once again. Olmos jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set before Sharma bowed out of the match, retiring in the second set to send Olmos through to the Round of 32.
