Failla and Smith Improve to NCAA Second Round|

ATHENS, Ga.--USC’s Jessica Failla and Gabby Smith each won their respective first round matches in the NCAA Singles Championship today (May 24) in Athens, Ga. Both Trojans are competing in their first NCAA Individual Championships and will each play in the Second Round tomorrow (May 25) at Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Sophomore No. 33 Failla was matched up against Mississippi State’s top player No. 7 Jasmine Lee. Failla upset the No. 7 seeded Lee in a swift two sets with scores of 6-4, 6-1. Tomorrow (May 25), Failla will take on North Carolina’s No. 18 Sara Daavettila in the Second Round. Daavettila defeated Georgia’s No. 52 Kennedy Shaffer 7-5, 6-3 in the First Round.
USC’s junior No. 25 Gabby Smith also claimed a decisive two set victory over her opponent, No. 29 Andie Dikosavljevic of Auburn. This was the second time this season that Smith has overtaken Dikosavljevic as she defeated her in USC's dual match versus Auburn on Jan. 29. With final scores of 6-3, 6-3, Smith secured her place in tomorrow’s (May 25) Second Round match to take on St. John’s No. 62 Jessica Livianu. In the First Round, Livianu upset Pepperdine’s No. 14 Luisa Stefani 7-6 (4), 6-4.
