Women of Troy Wrap First Action of 2014-15 Campaign|
Sept. 14, 2014
WACO, TEXAS -- The USC women's tennis team began its new season in the same place that the Women of Troy plan to wrap things up in 2015 with a trip to Waco, Texas, for action at the Baylor Under Armour Kick-Off Tournament. Baylor will play host to the 2015 NCAA Championships in May, so the visit was a chance for the Trojans to familiarize themselves with the courts they expect to play on in the postseason. At the same time, USC was able to garner some key early-season experience, as the Women of Troy bring home some solid victories from the trip.
USC toyed with some new pairings in the doubles realm, boasting the power of three talented new freshmen poised to pack some punch in the Trojan lineup this season. Freshmen Gabby Smith, Madison Westby and Meredith Xepoleas all tallied their first career victories as Trojans -- in doubles and in singles -- on day one of the action in Waco. In doubles, Westby paired with sophomore Zoë Katz for an 8-6 win over Texas A&M's Bhosale/Hristov, while the freshman duo of Smith and Xepoleas teamed up for an 8-0 shutout of Aggies Mamalat/Strickland. That same day saw the entire USC contingent go undefeated in singles play, facing a mix of players from Alabama and Texas A&M. Returners Zoë Scandalis, Giuliana Olmos, Gabriella DeSimone and Katz all gathered in their first singles victories of the season along with their new freshmen teammates.
Day two brought a change for more tuning up for the Trojans, who came away with DeSimone and Katz victorious in doubles play, while six Women of Troy grabbed wins in singles. The final day (Sept. 14) saw freshman pair Xepoleas/Westby and senior duo DeSimone/Scandalis snag wins over their respective Alabama and Texas opponents. In singles, USC had a tougher go of it against host Baylor players. Olmos was the lone Trojan of the four facing Bears today to grab a win. Olmos upended Baylor's #78 Blair Shankle 7-6 (3), 6-2, while freshman Smith also was able to finish off the trip with a win in beating #81 Ratnika Batra of Texas 6-4, 6-4. Olmos and Smith both went a perfect 3-0 in singles play over the three-day event, while Scandalis, Katz, Xepoleas and Westby each posted a 2-1 singles mark on the trip.
