All three Trojans competing in the NCAA Singles Championships today in Tulsa were up against high seeds, making for a tough start to their draws. On the men’s side, USC’s Nick Crystal and Max De Vroome were making their NCAA individual debuts, and both came up against difficult opponents to open the Round of 64. So, too, would senior Giuliana Olmos on the women’s side. In her third career trip to the NCAA singles bracket, she faced another high seed herself and would also take a loss in the opening round. Olmos will play on in doubles, however. Olmos takes her place alongside sophomore teammate Gabby Smith tomorrow (May 26) as a 9-16 seed to start out action in the NCAA Doubles Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.

The first to take the courts today was senior Max De Vroome, who was making his first career appearance in the NCAA Singles Championships. Ranked #23 in the nation after a banner year for the Trojans, de Vroome had to go up against the No. 3 seed and #3-ranked player in the nation in Tulane’s Dominik Koepfer. It was a rough opening draw for the USC senior, who held his ground against the high seed but wound up just short in a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Koepfer. That wrapped de Vroome’s senior campaign with a 28-12 overall singles record — matching his best season win count as a Trojan. The captain and 2016 ITA Southwest Region Senior Player of the Year finishes his USC career with a 109-42 (.722) overall singles record to go with a career mark of 89-46 in doubles.

Next on for USC was another senior. Women’s captain Giuliana Olmos was making her third appearance in an NCAA Singles draw. Ranked #27 in the nation, Olmos wound up lined up against #10 Breaunna Addison of Texas. The top-10 opponent was a tough was to start her 2016 NCAA journey, and Olmos would take a 6-4, 6-0 loss to Addison in today’s NCAA Round of 64. That caps Olmos’ singles record this season at 20-13. The two-time All-Pac-12 First Team honoree will continue her time in Tulsa on the doubles courts with partner Gabby Smith as a 9-16 seed in the NCAA Doubles draw. Today’s singles defeat wraps Olmos’ collegiate singles record at 105-44 (.705).

Olmos will have a shot at revenge tomorrow (May 26) when she and doubles teammate Smith go up against Addison and her Texas partner Wagland in the NCAA Doubles Round of 32. That USC-Texas clash is set for a 2:30 p.m. CT start in Tulsa.

USC’s third Trojan in singles action today was #41 junior Nick Crystal. In his NCAA Singles debut, Crystal squared off against #14 Joao Monteiro of Virginia Tech. Another seeded foe for a Trojan, Monteiro was able to fend off Crystal and tally a 6-4, 6-3 win in the Round of 64. The loss puts the junior captain at 24-12 overall in singles play this season to give him a career mark of 63-23 in his three seasons at Troy.
