Women of Troy Start Strong In National Rankings

Giuliana Olmos has cracked the national singles top-10 for the first time!
    Sept. 15, 2015

As the USC women’s tennis team gets in the mode to divide and conquer for individual action this fall, the Women of Troy are already looming large in the Oracle/ ITA national preseason rankings. Four Trojans are locked in with their highest career singles rankings to date to start the 2015-16 season, headlined by #10 Giuliana Olmos, who cracks the national top-10 for the first time in her Trojan career.

An ITA All-American, Giuliana Olmos also appears in the preseason national doubles rankings, tabbed at #31 alongside freshman Rianna Valdes. Just a step above that senior-freshman tandem are #31-ranked Zoë Katz and Madison Westby. Both Women of Troy also stand out in the national singles rankings at #114 and #36, respectively. Sophomore Madison Westby has upgraded her previous career best rank significantly. She topped out at #45 during her freshman campaign and now weighs in at #36 in the land as she starts up her sophomore season. Two other Trojan sophomores are also in the mix. Gabby Smith has bumped up to #59 in the nation after climbing as high as #65 as a freshman. And Meredith Xepoleas has edged up to #61 to start up the preseason three spots higher than her career best set in her freshman season, in which she finished up the year on a 21-match singles win streak.

This week brings up USC’s first official action of the 2015-16 season, where the Women of Troy are looking to get the ball rolling on another long campaign. Last spring, USC reached the NCAA Semifinals, and this season's roster looks well stocked for a chance to go even farther. Freshman Rianna Valdes has been tabbed as the nation’s #2 freshman/newcomer, and she is joined on the USC roster by fellow freshmen Jessica Failla, Alex Letzt and Kristen Venter.

The 2015-16 Women of Troy are all set to part ways this week, with Katz, Westby, Xepoleas and Letzt headed to competition at the Battle in the Bay in San Francisco (Sept. 17-20) while Giuliana Olmos and Gabby Smith make a move into the 2015 ITA/Oracle Masters in Malibu, Calif. (Sept. 18-20). There, Olmos will be one of 16 top singles players in the draw, and she will also combine forces with Smith in a field of eight of the nation’s top doubles pairs.
