LOS ANGELES -- The No. 22-ranked USC women's volleyball team (2-0) completed a three-set sweep (25-17, 25-15, 25-19) of Chicago State (0-2) in the Women of Troy Baden Invitational at Galen Center on Saturday, Aug. 29. Senior outside hitter Samantha Bricio led the way with nine kills (2e, 20att, .350) and three service aces for a match-high 12.0 points.
Sophomore outside hitter Niki Withers picked up seven kills (2e, 11att) and hit .455 and freshman outside Alyse Ford had six kills without an error (.667). In the middle, senior blocker Alicia Ogoms had five kills on seven swings (.714). Freshman middle blocker Rachel Reed got the start and finished with four kills (1e, 7att, .429) and three blocks.
Setters Alice Pizzasegola and Baylee Johnson each had 17 assists and junior libero Taylor Whittingham led the Trojans with 10 digs. USC hit .344 in the match with 43 kills (11e, 93att). For the Cougars, Elli Woinowsky had eight kills (3e, 21att, .238) and Essence Jackson-Jones had six.
USC began to pull away in the first set when Bricio put together back-to-back aces for an 8-5 lead. The Cougars were within striking distance nearly the entire way and were down just two points at 19-17, but the Trojans bore down and scored the final six point to clinch a 25-17 victory.
Chicago State led by two points, 6-4, in the second set, but the Trojans ripped through a 6-1 run to turn the tables and led, 10-7. The Cougar offense stalled at nine as USC built its lead, but it was Chicago State miscues and service errors that did the Cougars in. Bricio and sophomore opposite hitter Brittany Abercrombie made sure there was no comeback bid as their kills shut down the second set with a 10-point gap and a 25-15 Trojan win.
The Women of Troy scored on four of five rallies to get ahead by three points, 7-4, in the third set. A pair of reserve outside hitters came in and did some damage as sophomore Sarah Livingston scored a block and a kill, and freshman Tatum Harvey served up an ace to get USC in front by nine points, 20-11. Chicago State stood its ground and scored four straight to pull within four at 22-18, but Ford drove in a pair of daggers to give the Trojans match point at 24-18. Withers knocked the final kill off the Cougar block to complete the sweep with a 25-19 win in the third.
USC is back in action to conclude the Baden Invitational at 8 p.m. PT against No. 11-ranked BYU (1-0). The match will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks.
