RIO DE JANEIRO -- Three-time USC women's volleyball All-American outside hitter April Ross and her partner Kerri Walsh Jennings used an impressive 16-4 second-set flurry to top off a 2-0 win (21-16, 21-9) over China's Fan Wang and Yuan Yue in their second pool match at the Beach Volleyball Arena just after midnight on Tuesday, Aug. 9. Ross-Walsh Jennings improved to 2-0 in Pool C and will now have another day between matches before their final pool contest.
The first set went point for point until Ross and Walsh Jennings broke a nine-all tie with a 5-2 run to lead, 14-11. The American tandem extended to a four-point lead at 17-13 and brushed off a two-point spurt by the Chinese to claim a 21-16 win. The second set went the same way as the two pairs were tied at five-all until a 3-0 run put Ross-Walsh Jennings ahead for good. That short burst ballooned to a 13-3 run to give Team USA an 18-8 advantage. The Chinese scored just one more point before Ross and Walsh Jennings closed out their 16-4 run to complete a 16-minute set with a 21-9 score.
Up next, Ross and Walsh Jennings face the Swiss pair of Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Verge-Depre on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at approximately 9 p.m. in Brazil (5 p.m. PT). Fans can watch Ross-Walsh Jennings in their final pool match streamed live on NBCSports.com and via the NBC app.
