LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The USC women's volleyball team received 1,162 points in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division I Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll on Wednesday, August 10, and is tied for seventh to begin the season. The Women of Troy are one of five Pac-12 schools ranked in the preseason poll and are tied for the highest-ranked league team with Washington.
Defending NCAA champion Nebraska is ranked No. 1 with 1,594 points and 60 first-place votes. The Cornhuskers are followed by Texas, which had three first-place votes; Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kansas, and Hawai'i in sixth place. Following the Trojans and Huskies, Penn State ranks No. 9 with Florida at No. 10. Stanford is the next Pac-12 school in the poll at No. 11 and holds the 64th first-place vote. UCLA is ranked No. 12 and puts all four of the conference's schools within the top 15. BYU is ranked No. 13; Illinois at No. 14 and Ohio State at No. 15.
USC will face preseason ranked conference foes in five matches this season. The Trojans and Huskies will meet only once (Sept. 23 at Galen Center). The Women of Troy will also meet No. 18-ranked Creighton and No. 24 Kentucky in the USC Radisson Classic at Galen Center, Sept. 2-3, among non-conference goes in the poll.
The Trojans appear in the AVCA coaches poll for the 472nd time, which ranks fifth all-time. Only Nebraska and Stanford (494 times)--which have each appeared in every single poll--Hawai'i (483) and UCLA (473) have appeared in more polls than the Women of Troy. It is also the 312th time that USC has appeared among the top 10 of the poll, which ranks seventh all-time. Only the above-mentioned schools, Penn State, and Texas hold more top-10 rankings than the Trojans.
The Trojans will open the 2016 season as hosts of the USC Baden Invitational at Galen Center (Aug. 26-27). The Women of Troy start the year with an 8 p.m. PT match on Friday (Aug. 26) against Marquette, and will appear on Pac-12 Networks. UC Irvine and Santa Clara will also play in the season-opening tourney.
Last season, the USC women's volleyball team claimed a share of the Pac-12 title with an 18-2 mark in league matches and received the No. 1 overall seed in the 2015 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. Head coach Mick Haley was named the Volleyball Magazine National Coach of the Year for the first time in his career and added the award to his Pac-12 and AVCA Pacific South Region Coach of the Year selections. He led the Trojans to a 33-3 overall record with a fifth appearance in the NCAA Regional Championship match in six years.
