SAN FRANCISCO -- USC senior libero Taylor Whittingham was selected as the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 26 to Oct. 2, as announced by the conference office on Monday, Oct. 3. It is Whittingham's third-career weekly honor (Dec. 1, 2014; Oct. 19, 2015) and brings USC's all-time weekly certificate count to 68 not including 13 Freshman of the Week awards.
Washington's State's Taylor Mims was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Oregon's Ronika Stone was chosen for Freshman of the Week honors.
Following a short two-match absence due to a leg injury, Whittingham rejoined the Trojans on the court and posted back-to-back double-digit digs performances. She had 47 digs in just nine sets of action to average 5.22 dps. Whittingham also tallied 11 assists and a pair of crucial service aces that sparked a run to help the Trojans defeat Colorado.
Against the Buffaloes, Whittingham produced 19 digs and dished out a career-high eight assists to go with her two aces. On the following night, against Utah, she had 28 digs to go with three more assists. Whittingham has had 11 matches in double-digit digs this season and has gone over the 20-dig mark five times. She ranks seventh on USC's career ladder with 1,446 digs.
Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the sixth year (since 2011) that the Pac-12 has announced an offensive, defensive, and freshman honoree. Freshman of the week honors are not included in the all-time totals for each institution. Since 2011, USC has had 13 offensive awards, nine defensive awards, and 13 freshman honors.
